Here are two postcards by Mom - one using buttons and brads (see Debbie's tutorial by clicking here) and the other by cutting out a fabric picture and appliqueing it to the background.
You can find a lot of fun buttons at Joann's but don't forget to check out Michael's bead and scrap-booking supplies. The brads can be found in the scrapbook isles at Joann's and Michael's.
As Mom found it is better to AVOID using the buttons with shanks and use ones that you can sew through. This site shows both kinds http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Button.
